DERIVE Component of Calculus

The Labs:

During this semester calculus students will be given a number of DERIVE Labs to complete.  The maximum points students can earn on any completer lab will vary from 10 to 25 points, depending upon the length and difficulty of the lab.  The submitted lab must include answers to all questions on the lab handout, typed so that the results and/or conclusions are understandable.  The typed comments must use correct sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.  All DERIVE printouts must be clear with appropriate annotations when necessary for clarity.  All graphs must be embedded in the printout and clearly identified.

Open Explorations:

In addition, at the student’s option, “open explorations” on the Calculus Website/CD which are discussed in class can also be complete to earn DERIVE lab points. These “open explorations” must be completed as written and when the instructions state” to try other values and/or expressions” at least 3 different “values and/or expressions” must be used for each variable and/or function.  It may be necessary to use more than 3 in order to determine a pattern.  In order to receive credit (maximum of 5 points for each “open exploration”) the following items must be submitted and stapled together for each “open exploration”.

1.              All expressions and embedded graphs with the section, exercise and student name(s) typed on line one.

2.              A short typed paragraph which is the part of your Algebra Screen explaining what you learned from this exercise.  Do not state what you did but rather what you learned.  The paragraph must use correct sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.

The maximum number of points you can earn when all DERIVE Labs and “open explorations” are combined is 100.

Team Work:

You may work with a maximum group size of 2 students to solve these problems.  Only one report for the group will be accepted, and the group must insure that everyone has contributed to the effort.  All group members must be able to duplicate the results.  At my option, I may call on any student to explain the report and duplicate portions of it.  Grades will be lowered for all team members if any one member of the team cannot duplicate portions of the report.
